Three years practical use of the system here explained, leads him to believethat it will accomplish this result; for with its aid, the catalogues, shelf lists, indexes, and cross-references essential tothis increased usefulness, can be made more economically than by any other method which he has been able to find. Thesystem was devised for cataloguing and indexing purposes, but it was found on trial to be equally valuable fornumbering and arranging books and pamphlets on the shelves.

El Sistema de Clasificación Decimal Dewey (también llamado CDD) es un sistema de clasificación de bibliotecas. Fue desarrollado por Melvil Dewey, bibliotecario del Amherst College en Massachusetts, EE. UU., en 1876 y desde ese momento ha sido enormemente modificado y ampliado en el transcurso de sus veintitrés principales ediciones que han ocurrido hasta 2012. Durante este tiempo y desde 1894 también se han desarrollado 15 ediciones abreviadas, basadas en la Edición mayor desarrollada generalmente un año antes. La edición impresa n.º 22 en español incluye muchas características nuevas que simplifican el uso de la clasificación. La edición no abreviada de cuatro volúmenes se publica cada siete años, aproximadamente. La presente edición, de común acuerdo con OCLC, se ha denominado Edición 22, pero incluye actualizaciones posteriores a la publicación de la Edición 22 impresa en inglés, por lo que podría decirse que es en realidad un punto intermedio entre las dos últimas ediciones impresas en inglés. Esta convergencia agrega una característica especial a las nuevas características de la Edición 22, que se explican más adelante en estas páginas preliminares, y que describen con amplitud los cambios más importantes que trae esta nueva edición en español. Siguiendo la política editorial de las traducciones anteriores, la traducción de la Edición 22 sigue en forma substancial el desarrollo de la edición en inglés y no presenta modificaciones propias.
