Description
The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system, devised by library pioneer Melvil Dewey in the 1870s provides a dynamic structure for the organization of library collections. The DDC is the world's most widely used library classification system. This four-volume print version is the entire, updated Dewey Decimal Classification system. Published in 2023, the new edition includes many new topics and significant updates to selected fields, new numbers informed by input with the worldwide Dewey community, revisions to several standard subdivisions, and other enhancements - all carefully incorporated to make classification and access easier than ever. In DDC 2023, youll find enhancements like an improved international framework for education topics. Youll also see significant expansions for topics like athletic and outdoor sports and games. These changes more accurately reflect regional differences around the world, and give you the means to better serve your Library users.
The plan of the following Classification and Index was developed early in 1873. It was the result of several months'study of library economy as found in some hundreds of books and pamphlets, and in over fifty personal visits to variousAmerican libraries. In this study, the author became convinced that the usefulness of these libraries might be greatlyincreased without additional expenditure. Three years practical use of the system here explained, leads him to believethat it will accomplish this result; for with its aid, the catalogues, shelf lists, indexes, and cross-references essential tothis increased usefulness, can be made more economically than by any other method which he has been able to find. Thesystem was devised for cataloguing and indexing purposes, but it was found on trial to be equally valuable fornumbering and arranging books and pamphlets on the shelves.
